FSC acts to clear credit confusion

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is to launch a Paper Forum to try and bring together key players in the industry, following confusion over its Chain of Custody Certification for printers.

It follows the FSC accreditation handed to Curtis Fine Papers Retreeve brand, which was launched in London last Wednesday. Printers who attended the event expressed concern that they did not have the Chain of Custody, which meant that they could not put the FSC logo on the final printed product.

Robert Horne and the FSC are telling us to buy this paper but only two printers in the country have the Chain of Custody. They really should be making it easier for printers, said one printer at the event.

But FSC UK director Anna Jenkins said that there was another way to gain the logo by linking up with a company that had the Chain of Custody. But she admitted that the print industry had been lagging behind on FSC.

It is for valid reasons. There is not the best supply of FSC material and nor has there been so much demand, she added.

Jenkins said that a Paper Forum was still on the drawing board but in two months the FSC would look to bring in key players in a bid to stimulate the market.

It will set up a direct line of communication and have a representative spread of the industry. There was a similar project in North America, and it found there was a supply and demand but the key people were not talking to each other, she said.

Robert Horne will distribute the updated Retreeve and the FSC move has received backing from Greenpeace. The range targets the company and environmental report market.

Retreeve is made with a minimum of 40% FSC certified fibre and 20% post-consumer waste. All virgin fibre is made from Elemental Chlorine Free woodpulp.
