Former Lynhurst Press director mourned

David Samuels, the former co-owner of Basildon’s Lynhurst Press, has died aged 77.

Samuels started his industry career in 1973, working at Quickset as a sales executive. The business was part of the Carlisle House Group and carried out the typesetting for a number of large publishers including Dennis Publishing, Haymarket, and Northern & Shell.

Samuels’ son Paul, who is technical director at London pre-media business Zebra , said: “In 1990 Dad was one of the people who purchased the printing company set up to print the paste-up boards from the administrators of the Carlisle House Group. The company was Called Lynhurst Press, and they specialised in reader reply cards, short-run brochures and stationery. Dad was the print rep and director of Lynhurst until his retirement in 2007. He sold his shares to his twin brother Alec after his retirement.”

In retirement Samuels enjoyed gardening and holidays. He is survived by his wife Jean, daughter Sharon, son Paul, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

“Dad was a well-known character around London. Most of his clients became good friends of both him and his family,” Samuels added.

“He spent a lot of time entertaining and had a number of phrases. One of his clients even made a ‘Book of Dave's Phrases’. I think every client experienced ‘One for the road’, ‘I tell the jokes’ and ‘It's a good bit of board’.”

His funeral will be held at 2pm on Tuesday 10 September at Alford Crematorium, Station Road, Alford LN13 9LH.

The Samuels family have asked that, rather than flowers, donations should be made to the RNLI in his memory.
