Euro averts strike over closure

Industrial action at Birmingham-based Euro Packaging has been averted after the company guaranteed the Sparkbrook plants future for at least another year.

Amicus graphical paper and media sector members at the firm had once again been on the brink of industrial action over issues involving the non-payment of shift allowances among other issues (PrintWeek, 4 November).

"One of the big concerns that members had was that the plant was going to close down," said Amicus national officer Peter Ellis.

The firm has now pledged that the site will remain open for at least another 12 months, providing it does not lose any contracts.

"They (management) have also agreed to a comprehensive review of the pay structure in line with the BPIF agreement."

Ellis said negotiations between the two parties over pay will now take place in January next year.

Although there will still some issues left to be resolved, Ellis said the deal was an important one to safeguard the future for the Sparkbrook staff.
