Delphax boost to S&O output

Security printer Smith & Ouzman has increased its digital capacity by 80% with a 300,000 investment in a Delphax CR1300 digital web press.

The monochrome duplex press, ordered by the Eastbourne family firm six weeks after first seeing it at Drupa, can run at speeds up to 36,000 A4 sheets per hour.

The press, which caps a 1m spend over the past 12 months, will sit alongside existing Xerox and Oc digital sheetfed presses.

"The Delphax had benefits over every other press we looked at," said sales director Nick Smith. "The continuous personalisation was much faster than the sheetfed, although the new press will not replace work better suited to the sheetfed presses."

He added that one new member of staff had joined following the installation, and that further recruitments would be made as a second and third shift were introduced.

Production director Phil Ouzman said: "We have the option to re-reel from the Delphax machine and we're considering the purchase of a system to produce fan-folded work."

The company is now seeking APACS accreditation to print magnetic E13B MICR numbering used on cheques and other secure documents.
