Newtown-based Control Techniques has completed upgrades to 15 of Wappings 80 reelstands and a further 10 more upgrades have been ordered.
The Mentor II DC drives have replaced analogue drives and have improved feed accuracy and reduced web breaks.
News International technical support engineer Clive Stevens said sourcing spares for the old drives had become a real headache.
After a problem it could take a couple of hours to go through the set-up procedure to get them back on line. The move to Mentors has been a huge improvement, said Stevens.
The project, which started at the end of 2001, involved Control Techniques writing bespoke software and code for Wapping.
The plant itself houses 16 MAN Roland Newsman 40 presses, each capable of producing 80,000 copies an hour, as well as 5,000 reels of newsprint.
