Companies launch out of former Ailec sites

Ailec Mailing Services two former sites in Plymouth and Roche will continue to operate as mailing houses after assets of the company were bought by two firms.

St Ives launched South West Mailing after buying the Roche factory and kit used by Ailec, which stopped trading in May.

Roche previously had around 300 staff and is now headed by general manager Brian Hankins, who joined from Century Litho in Truro.

"We aim to employ around 60 staff and most should be from Ailec," said St Ives' web division managing director David Emeny.

His firm bought a Buhrs-Zaandam mailing line from the administrative receiver and has ordered two new top-range Sitma machines.

"Ailec did labour intensive hand work. But instead of casuals, it used a lot of permanent staff, which was not very flexible," said Emeny.

"We will specialise in mechanised mailing, banding and gift mounts. If we can do it mechanically we'll do the work. If we can't, we won't."
Plymouth-based DM firm Pepper Communications launched a company from Ailec's smaller site in the town, which employed around 30 staff.

The Direct Mailing Company (DMC) handles laser printing, personalisation, database management and enclosing. It has 15 staff, including some ex-Ailec.

It hopes to double this figure and hit 1m turnover in a year, said Pepper chief executive and DMC managing director Steve Whitford.
