Chapelton becomes Smurfit graphic board distributor

Speciality paper and cartonboard supplier Chapelton has become a distributor for Smurfit Kappa’s graphic board range of products, produced at Smurfit’s Wrexen board mill in Germany.

It has been distributing the products since 1 July and prices vary depending on batch size and weight.

This is the fourth Smurfit mill that Chapelton is now distributing products from and the company is the only Smurfit agent for these mills in the UK.

Chapelton managing director Neil Skelton said: "The market this represents are for jigsaws and book covers, for which Wrexen's products are class-leading. And this is good as it’s not something we’ve previously had access to; none of our other mills make this board so it fits well into our portfolio.

“What I’m doing when I approach these different markets is selling some other grades so it has benefitted the company in that way as well.”

The boards come in pasted grey and pasted black in a variety of different forms, including a black-lined version and a white-lined version on either one side or both sides.

Skelton said the black-lined products have sold particularly well as they cut out the need for outsourcing.

“Having the black line is a real advantage for us. What a lot of customers would have done in the past is to buy from a UK converter, who would have laminated two bits of card together then laminated a black line on top,” he said.

The paper is produced using Fourdrinier production methods with recycled paper as its raw material content.

Last May, Chapelton started distributing International Paper’s Speed-E offset paper.

“It is important for us to have big names such as International Paper and Smurfit Kappa as it opens a lot more doors for us,” added Skelton.

10-staff Chapelton operates from a facility in Aylesford, Kent. Founded in 1984, it rebranded in 2015 and changed its name from Chapelton Board Sales.
