Frome-based BT&D will provide finishing and printing services, producing the full range of 260 OS maps – a total annual print run of 2.3m.

Kevin Sarney, BT&D managing director, said he was delighted to have been awarded the contract, which was officially signed on 2 September, with production due to start in the next few months.

"It is something different for us and it is testament to us as a company that we have been awarded the tender. We now want to add to the OS's quality of service," he added.

A spokesman for OS said the company had picked a business that would maintain the quality of the product after deciding to outsource its print and finishing facilities to BT&D.

He explained: "Once we move to our new building in Southampton, we won't be printing any maps in-house.

"As for the presses, the specialist equipment that we use for map folding and finishing will go to BT&D, while our other presses will be sold."

The company's print department includes a KBA Rapida 162A six-colour press, which it has had an offer for, and a KBA Rapida 130A five-colour press with IR drying and densitronic colour management that is still available.

Companies that tendered for the OS contract had to bid under TUPE rules – Ordnance Survey currently employs around 30 in print and 10 in the warehouse. It is not known what impact the contract award will have on staff.

Elsewhere, BT&D has appointed Robin Miller as chairman with immediate effect. He was formerly the chief executive and chairman of EMAP.

BT&D sole-owner Felix Dennis, who acquired the business in 2008, remains a director of the company.  

Sarney said: "With the media landscape rapidly changing and the arrival of widespread digital technology, Sir Robin's experience will further strengthen the business as we establish BT&D at the forefront of this new era."

BT&D prints colour publications and offers a high-quality, end-to-end print service for the book, corporate reporting, periodicals and brochure markets.
