Bertrams to close Leeds plant and move to Norwich

Book wholesaler Bertrams, which was acquired by Smith News in 2009 after Woolworths collapsed, is to close the group's Leeds facility and relocate to its Norwich headquarters.

The company will close its 3,700sqm facility in Leeds, moving everything to a 17,000sqm site in Norwich.

According to managing director Michael Neil, around 120 to 130 jobs will be lost in Leeds, however, almost as many will be created in Norwich.

He said: "Around 30 staff will be moved to an office in Bradford, but a large number of staff will be made redundant. We would love it if everyone could move over, but only a handful of employees are able to move."

Neil added that the move, which is expected to be complete by the end of September, was being done to improve the company's efficiency, particularly in the face of government spending cuts.

He said: "We move books from Norwich to Leeds and then ship them from there. It will be far more efficient this way.

"We supply a lot of libraries, which are dependent on the public sector. If that spend is going to be cut we need to position ourselves for the future."
