Agfa unveils plate quality monitor

Agfa has announced plans to launch its quality control monitor aimed at plate production in the newspaper printing sector.

The Afirma, which is already available in North America, continually monitors the most vital areas of the platesetter, processor and punch bender.

All reports can be accessed either on location or through a remote web interface, with an automated alarm system in place to alert operators about  faulty plates.

"By keeping just one faulty plate off the press, Afirma can pay for itself," said Agfa director of US newspaper operations Peter Wilkens.

Afirma's features include the monitoring of platesetter engine status and user resolution, as well as pre-heat temperature and roller speed of the processor.

Although the monitor was designed with newspapers in mind, large web offset users in the commercial sector are also likely be interested.
