Rising star: Kyle Miller, pre-press operator, McAllister Litho Glasgow

Kyle is 19 and has been working in the printing industry for nearly two-and-half years. He is currently undertaking an apprenticeship focusing on pre-press technology at family-owned McAllister Litho, which offers a range of litho and digital printing services.

What did you study, and did you have a particular career in mind?

Computer-aided design and technologies at college with the aim of becoming an architectural technician 

How did you find your way into the industry?

A family friend

Did you know anything about print beforehand?

I didn’t really know much about the print industry at all

What does your current role entail?

Processing and proofing customers’ files to ensure they are good to be printed. On top of that I operate large-format printing machines as well as doing print finishing work, such as laminating posters and mounting pull-up banners

What’s the most enjoyable or interesting thing about it?

The best thing about it is getting to see a job go from PDF file to a finished printed product ready for the customer

Do you have an ideal career path mapped out?

Nothing as of yet, ideally to continue to progress in my current role and take it from there

What would be your dream job (print related)?

Becoming a company director within a printing business

What has surprised you most about working in the printing industry?

The amount of work that goes on in a factory to complete a job from start to finish
