UPM Shotton holds sustainablility open day for schoolchildren

Paper manufacturer UPM Shotton has held an open day for 160 schoolchildren to take part in sustainability and hands-on science workshops at the paper plant.

Students were given the opportunity to learn about paper and renewable energy, and were given a tour of the site.

In the afternoon, 47 students went to a sustainability workshop in recognition of their participation in the Make It in Manufacturing Challenge, of which UPM Shotton is the regional manufacturing partner.

David Ingham, general manager UPM Shotton, said: "These children are our future employees, customers and readers of the newspapers we supply newsprint for.

"Getting to see how we do it, and how sustainably we work, is extremely important for us."

The initiative has been supported by Business in the Community and Techniquest Wrexham.

Shotton paper mill started production in May 1985 and in January 2010 it announced a £17m investment to build a materials recovery facility.
