Toilet roll print & firms in Qatar

Joanne Gardner tracks down the solutions to your technical troubles

Q Does anyone know a printer in the UK who can print on toilet rolls?
Adrian Jeffery, via printweek.com
A Before I even had a chance to share my unending knowledge of printed toilet rolls, who should appear and steal my thunder but Jo Francis of former Help Line fame (among innumerable other fame-claims). Not that I minded of course. She mentioned an old UK contact of hers, Dynamic Products in Flint, but said they had since stopped doing loo rolls. Somewhat further afield, Jo suggested Carlberg Grafix in Illinois (001 217 525 4805, www.printedtp.com), which offers a range of standard toilet paper designs plus the option of custom-printed designs. Price starts at $12 per roll for four rolls. And a few suggestions of my own: Caterprint’s Leonard Landsberg (020 8886 1600) prints onto toilet rolls and other tissue printers include Adline Personalised Products (0141 221 1491) and The Imperial Match Co (020 7328 2588).

Q  I work for an international exhibition company that has shows all around the world. I need to find a litho printer in Qatar, Middle East. Can you help?
Karl Weber, Via email
A At the end of some Google-based research, I came to the conclusion that, in the Middle East, printing companies are referred to as ‘printing presses’. I contacted online business directory Smart Qatar (www.smartqatar.com), as well as the Qatar British Business Forum (QBBF) (www.qbbf.com), but with little joy. I returned to Google and the two of us managed to uncover a few ‘presses’. To name but a few:  Renoda Modern Printing Press, Qatar National Printing Press, Middle East Printing Press and Gulf Printing Press. The problem is, websites seem to be few and far between, so first try one that did have a website: Ali Bin Ali (www.alibinali.com). Alternatively, visit www.qtel.com.qa for the phone numbers of the firms above and many more (look up the category ‘printing press’; and sub category ‘printing press’).

FOGRA #2
On 11 July, I quoted Paul Sherfield as saying there is no certification to ISO 12647/2 (Fogra certification) other than by unapproved bodies. Ian Reid has been in touch to say that UK printers can become Fogra-certified with Bodoni Systems. He also said it incorporates more than just print and requires control and measurement of displays, proofs, plates and lighting.
