Stationers' expands apprenticeships event for Guildhall relocation

The Stationers’ Company will bring back its successful Apprentice event for a second year, with student attendance expected to be five times greater.

Apprentice 19 is to take place on 18-19 June, relocating from Ravensbourne University London, Greenwich, to Guildhall in central London, with around 60 employers registered to exhibit the opportunities available to students in the creative sectors.

Industries covered alongside the print sector will include journalism, design, publishing and more, as the Stationers’ Company will be hosted at Guildhall by the City of London Corporation, which will use the event as a “centrepiece” of its own careers week.

Around 2,000 students from schools across Greater London are expected to attend, far exceeding the 400 in attendance last year.

Stationers’ Company education committee chair Helen Esmonde said: “The event was conceived as a two-way process to both meet the future skills needs of our industries and also to raise awareness of career opportunities for young people. Apprentice 19 was successful in that regard.

“Companies who took part in 2018 were keen to participate again. I was told by Paragon CC that they had nine applications as a result of last year’s event and the BPIF described this year’s edition to me as a crucial enabler for our industry.

“We are very focused on seeking young and diverse talent and skills to build the future of our industry and there are terrific, innovative things happening right across the sectors that will appeal to all sorts of students.”

Confirmed companies taking stands at Apprentice 19 will include Paragon CC, Shepherds Bookbinders, Pearson, Google, Bloomberg, Barclays, KPMG and The Telegraph.

Repro specialist Hobs will be setting up a virtual reality cube to show students the potential modern applications of printing.

Esmonde encouraged any print companies wishing to participate in Apprentice 19 to get in touch with the Stationers’ Company or the BPIF.
