Winner
Surrey & Berkshire Media

A defeated finalist in 2007 and 2008, Surrey & Berkshire Media returned intent on claiming the top spot and this time the judges could find no fault with the Reading-based printer's impressive array of papers, all of which demonstrated "good strong blacks", as well as "a good colour result". Among the papers printed by Surrey & Berkshire Media is The Wokingham Times, which prides itself on its clear design, use of powerful pictures and exceptional print quality. The standard is set by Surrey & Berkshire Media's pre-press department, which provides a setting service and employs a PDF proofing service via email to ensure that all proofs are delivered quickly and at a high quality. The plates are imaged on an Agfa Polaris 100 platesetter and the baton is then taken up by the print team, which is able to offer high-quality front-to-back colour via the printer's four-tower Goss Colorliner 70 web press, with commercial heatset technology. Registration is controlled using QTI register control systems, with accuracy pinpointed to 0.1mm.

Peterboro Web

Peterboro Web is no stranger to this category, having been honoured at the awards in each of the past five years for its newspaper printing prowess. This is its third commendation in that half-decade run, to go with its wins in 2006 and 2007, and this time around it was the company's work on Motorsport News (MSN) that most impressed the judges. The weekly title is printed in full colour on Peterboro Web's 10-tower Goss Universal 70 web press.
