Johnston Press announces new chief executive

Newspaper publisher Johnston Press has hinted that it is positioning itself further into the new technology sector after revealing its new chief executive.

Ashley Highfield will replace John Fry, who announced plans to leave in March, on 1 November, Fry steps down on 31 October. Highfield will also be awarded £500,000 worth of shares upon his appointment

He is a vice president of Microsoft, responsible for the UK consumer and online business, which incorporates content portal MSN.

Prior to Microsoft, Highfield was director of new media and technology at the BBC, where he was responsible for the launch of the BBC’s iPlayer and editor in chief of BBC Online.

He has also been chief executive of Project Kangaroo, a video-on-demand BBC/ITV/C4 joint venture.

A spokeswoman for Johnston Press described him as a "champion of content", adding that his appointment did not mean the company would be focusing on its websites over printed publications.

She said: "He understands the value of content, has experience of running a large team of journalists and will be continuing to evolve Johnston Press and grow the company."

Johnston Press chairman Ian Russell said: "I am delighted to announce Ashley’s appointment. His combined online and media sector pedigree will be a major strength in enabling us to grow our business again.
