Archant set to make 36 staff redundant

Newspaper printer Archant Print is set to make 36 staff redundant after it decided to outsource the printing of some of its newspaper titles.

The Archant Print Centre, at Thorpe St Andrew near Norwich, will retain a full night shift operation six nights a week, to print Norfolk and Suffolk daily and weekly titles, alongside a small single press day shift.

Last month, the company entered into a consultation period with 97 staff at its Thorpe Print Centre, and said some 50 staff would be made redundant.

Following the consultation, this number has been reduced to 36.

Archant Print will outsource the printing of some of its newspaper titles, predominantly from London, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, to Newsfax in London. It said the move is expected to generate significant cost savings.

Archant Print managing director Nick Schiller said: "The consultation process was very constructive and has resulted in improved, more resilient and flexible proposals with a better outcome for the company and a reduced impact on the workforce.

"The consultation team comprising senior management, team leaders, elected staff and union representatives was very effective in proposing a number of alternative strong ideas which we shall be adopting."

He added that keeping a small day shift would enable the business to keep maintenance and production support in-house, as well as keep serving its external contract print customers.

The move will take place over the summer.

In September 2009, Archant Print completed an £8m investment in new press and mailing kit and claimed it was the largest print centre in the UK dedicated to regional newspapers.
