Unite, the UK’s biggest union, which is based in London, has organised a demonstration at Gordon Brown’s first Labour Party Conference.

Print and packaging workers are expected to march alongside other industries.

Unite’s campaign aims to encourage the government to set tighter legislation for the UK manufacturing industry.

Tony Burke, Unite assistant general secretary, outlined his demands at the Trade Union Congress Conference last week. He called for stronger employment rights, equal rights for agency workers and better public services.

He welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement to double apprenticeships over the next 10 years and produce 5m more skilled jobs.

He said: “If the Prime Minister wants the best-trained workforce in the world, he will have to introduce sector skills-based levies that are compulsory on employers.”
