Shapps: "an enormous honour" to be appointed to new job

In an extraordinary turn of events printing company owner Grant Shapps has become the new home secretary.

Shapps was appointed yesterday (19 October) after previous incumbent Suella Braverman quit the role.

He had been sacked as Transport Secretary six weeks ago when Liz Truss took over from Boris Johnson as Prime Minister, having not supported Truss in the leadership election.

With the government seemingly lurching from one crisis to another, as the time of writing it was unclear whether Truss would be able to cling to power.

Shapps is the majority shareholder in London design and printing business Printhouse Corporation, based in north London not far from Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium.

He has had a varied and colourful political and business career, and also holds a pilot’s licence.

Shapps is the MP for Welwyn Hatfield and recently cut the ribbon on a new press at constituency business Silver Fox.

Update: Liz Truss announced she was resigning as Prime Minister at 1.35pm on 20 October. There will be a week-long leadership election to appoint her successor.
