Glossop Cartons has expanded its floorspace by more than 50% after taking on the 2,300sqm industrial building next door to its existing 4,140sqm Stockport production units.

Supported by a six-figure funding package from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, the acquisition of the new unit was completed at the end of September and was quickly followed by the installation of the firm’s second Brausse Forza 900 C3 folder-gluer.

As well as paving the way for further investment in new machinery to boost Glossop’s production capacity, turnaround time and flexibility, the extra space will also enable the company to improve its operational efficiency and increase the size of its onsite storage facilities.

Joint managing director Jacky Sidebottom-Every told Printweek: “The building that we were in, Unit 5 where all of the production was housed, was very snug, so when we had a lot of work in progress it was getting quite difficult to move pallets around.

“The opportunity came up to buy next door, which doesn’t happen very often at all, and we thought that if we don’t grasp it now then it won’t come up again for a long time.

“So we’ve moved finishing into next door which gives everybody a lot more space and they’re able to crack on and get the work through the plant.

“We are also storing more contracts on site, but this is futureproofing too for additional contracts that we’re looking for.”

She added: “Going back quite some time, Contact Print & Packaging [which Glossop Cartons acquired in 2015] were in that unit until they had [Unit 5] built and then they moved out. But prior to us it was occupied by a hospital service company, which deep-cleaned beds.”

Glossop’s first Brausse Forza 900 C3 was installed last summer. The new machine is the updated version of the original model and features motorised carriers. The business also operates a Bobst Expertfold folder-gluer as well as Mitsubishi presses.

“Our other machines were at full capacity, so we needed more capacity to help us grow. We couldn’t have another machine in Unit 5 because we were full. The new Brausse was available quickly and has filled the need that we had straight away,” said Sidebottom-Every.

Established in 1982, Glossop Cartons manufactures a wide range of cartonboard packaging products including cartons, sleeves, wallets, blister and skin pack cards, counter top and shelf displays, header and hanging cards.

The 80-staff business, which turns over around £8.5m, serves customers in markets including pharmaceutical and personal care, food and drink, vape and household.
