The eighth Visual Media Conference (VMC), which is taking place this week with a hybrid programme of live-streamed and pre-recorded sessions, will conclude with a focus on the environmental side of sustainability tomorrow (23 September).

The three-day linear virtual conference, which is running this year with the theme Sustainability through Innovation, kicked off yesterday and is being hosted on the Hopin virtual event platform.

CDI president and VMC curator Robert McClements told Printweek the feedback so far has been “off the scale”.

“It’s just reassured me that we are doing something very important. We are producing not just the sessions but signposts to other content, international expertise, and wisdom. It’s a real crossroads of vital information that is being hungrily eaten.”

He cited highlights from the first day including a sustainability panel chaired by Printweek editor and publisher Darryl Danielli, which McClements called “a fantastic kick-off”.

Asda senior director for design Rob Sindermann’s deep dive into the sustainable story of the supermarket giant’s Middleton store, meanwhile, was described by McClements as “one of the most convincing presentations that I’ve ever seen”.

The VMC aims to take attendees on a journey, exploring key topics around sustainability and innovation, including the arguments for why and how to innovate and stay sustainable, and what this could mean for your business as well as the environment.

Today’s sessions are focusing on innovation in technology, with the afternoon’s proceedings culminating with an Intergraf International Panel chaired by BPIF CEO Charles Jarrold and featuring Beatrice Klose from Intergraf, Printing United Alliance CEO Ford Bowers, and Drupa director and global head of print technologies Sabine Geldermann.

VMC is organised annually by BPIF special interest group CDI (Creative Digital Industries) in conjunction with Boss and founding partners Precision Proco Group and Creative Race.
