DMG Media is to close one of its newspaper printing sites, with significant job losses anticipated, after acquiring the plant less than two years ago.

The Daily Mail publisher said it will close its newspaper printing site at Hillsea, Portsmouth which it bought from JPI Media in October 2020 along with its two other sites: Dinnington in South Yorkshire, and Carn in Northern Ireland.

In a statement, a DMG Media spokesperson said: “Following an extensive review of the Associated Print Holdings business based at Portsmouth, DMG Media is proposing to shut down the plant, in order to consolidate print operations.

“This has been a difficult but necessary decision and regrettably, the proposal may result in significant job losses. The company will engage in a consultation process with the staff and union that will be both full and considered.

“We are absolutely committed to helping everyone who is affected and supporting them through the process.”

The site currently prints Portsmouth daily title, The News, which is owned by National World since it acquired JPI Media in January last year for more than £10.2m.
