Minuteman King’s Lynn takes first Fastbind all-in-one binder

Minuteman Press in King’s Lynn has taken delivery of the UK’s first Fastbind Pureva Neo all-in-one manual binder to diversify into short run, customised, soft and hardback books.
The machine, which is suitable for high quality PUR and EVA book production, was supplied by Ashgate Automation and installed in December alongside a new Casematic A46Z semi-automatic casemaker.
“We’ve seen a rapid expansion since we introduced e-commerce and this was one of the reasons for our move two years ago to a [929sqm] energy efficient, flagship store,” said sales manager Dan Roberts.
“Online occasion cards, which we impose, print [on two Xerox Iridesse digital printers], bar code and pack ready for delivery all over the UK make up a large percentage of our operation. The rest comes from serving local businesses in and around Norfolk with their printing and finishing requirements.
“Being able to manufacture a huge product range in-house has allowed us to develop a reputation locally for same-day delivery.”
He added: “We have now turned our attention to short run, customised books, which lend themselves to online ordering and will expand our e-commerce offering. In fact, we are fulfilling a demand because customers are already asking for them.”
Minuteman also looked at a larger, more automated machine before the Fastbind range was recommended to the company.
“Their equipment is more suited to the variability of our work and the production of very short runs,” said Roberts.
The Pureva Neo has a production speed of one to three books per minute with a minimum binding thickness of 0.1mm and a maximum of 45mm.
The minimum product width is 140mm with a maximum of 320mm, while the binding length is up to 455mm.
Minuteman said it was impressed with the Pureva Neo’s new cartridge glue mechanism, which can be changed quickly and easily.
Meanwhile, the business said the automation on its new Casematic A46Z semi-automated casemaker will make the operator’s work more accurate, while covers and cases can be produced quickly with no set up time.
The company has just produced its first order for a batch of books made from FSE, recycled stock, which matches its ethos to reduce its carbon footprint.
