FCL Graphics goes digital with Xerox Color 1000 install

After years of successfully serving the financial and insurance direct mail industries with offset printing, Harwood Heights, IL-based FCL Graphics this week announced several new equipment investments, including its first ever digital printer, a Xerox Color 1000.

In an interview with PrintWeek, FCL President and CEO Michael Ford explained, "We've focused on direct mail since we were founded back in 1973 — we've done sheetfed offset, half web and full web and tended to focus on long-run static non-personalized runs. But now we're going to move in the direction where the marketing is going, which is personalization."

FCL does between $50m and $60m in annual sales and boasts an impressive national client list, including major banks JP Morgan Chase and Wells Fargo.

"Our plant is one of the few that can now offer digital, offset, half-web and full-web capabilities under one roof," Ford said, noting the company already has variety of equipment, including a Manroland 700 sheetfed press, and Heidelberg M-1000BE full-web presses.

"We always had a big focus on financial and insurance mailings and this will just kind of open that up and enable to service our current customers with their digital printing runs."

The new-generation Xerox Color 1000 can produce 100ppm at 2400 x 2400dpi in four color. It also features Xerox's low melt, EA Dry Ink with no fuser oil, providing an improved digitally mastered image quality with smooth offset-like finish.

FCL also invested in two high-speed fully automatic Muller Martini saddle stitch binders for its binder operations and an MCS 600 Array inkjet mailer providing up to 6in of inkjet printing at speeds of up to 36,000 pages per hour.
