Precise details are currently unavailable, but it’s understood that an experienced yard man at the Rotherham printer became trapped by the arm in the waste extraction/compaction system late on Monday afternoon, as it was getting dark.
The former Garnett Dickinson Print business was acquired by Paul Mursell and Jeremy Spring just three weeks ago.
Spring told PrintWeek: “There has been an incident and we need to find out exactly what has happened, and how. In addition to working with the HSE we have our own health and safety advisers advising us separately.”
The worker is currently being treated in hospital for his injuries. Spring said he was being fully supported by the company.
“His arm has been severely damaged,” Spring added. “He is a very experienced member of staff and everyone is completely mystified about how this has happened. Of course, if necessary, the equipment and our procedures will be rectified.
“We have assured staff that no corner is going to be cut by this management team and any deficits will be put right immediately."
Part of the site’s waste extraction system has been shut down as a result of the incident.
“Our presses, binders and stitchers are all running, we are just limited in the amount of waste we can get out at the moment. We’ve spoken to customers and we will delay a few jobs and will go for 24/7 operation rather than 24/6,” Spring said.
The HSE confirmed that it was aware of the incident and was investigating. PrintWeek understands that HSE officials are on site at GD Web Offset today (15 February).
