Womens lifestyle mags drop cover flap designs

Recently launched womens lifestyle magazines Easy Living and Happy have both dropped their distinctive cover flaps, which aimed to make them stand out from newsstand rivals.

Chris Hughes, publisher of Cond Nast's Easy Living, said that the 9cm flap had been a part of the magazine's launch strategy which, after four issues, had "run its course".

"The flap raises art direction issues, because the model has to be on the right-hand side of the cover, and it means we can only make limited use of the top left-hand corner," he said.

Hughes added that the decision to drop the flap had nothing to do with production or cost. Easy Living launched in January and is printed at Cooper Clegg.

Northern & Shell's new shopping magazine Happy, printed at Polestar Chantry, launched in May with the split cover, but the latest edition does not sport the gimmick.
