Twenty10 invests in DigiBook 200 PUR binder

Digital printer Twenty10 Digital has invested in a Morgana DigiBook 200 PUR perfect binder to bring short-run perfect binding in-house.

The Northampton-based firm paid around £24,000 for the machine, which was installed at its premises last month.

The DigiBook 200, which was launched at Ipex earlier this year, handles spine lengths from 110-320mm and the maximum thickness is 50mm.

It features more automation than the entry-level DigiBook 150 and can bind up to 200 books per hour. Retractable spine milling means that the machine can easily switch between soft- and hard-cover binding.

“We were struggling to find a quality PUR binding service that was even relatively local. We did find, however, that binding services that we were able to use wanted 30 or 40 overs for jobs of just a few hundred copies in order to set up their equipment,” said managing director Paul Riley.

“That kind of additional print demand can make a huge difference between making a profit or not on a digital job. The only solution was for us to install our own PUR perfect binder.

“Morgana has helped us out over the years and we’ve been considering buying a PUR perfect binder from the company for a while now. We were waiting for a more automated system before we made the investment. When we saw the DigiBook 200 in action, we knew that it was the product to solve our difficulties.”

The firm runs a range of other Morgana kit including a CardXtra for small-format jobs, a DocuMaster for bookletmaking, a Matrix laminator, a Rhin-o-Tuff wiro-binding machine and a Morgana Major folder. The company also operates an HP Indigo 3050, a Canon wide-format printer and a Mimaki A2 flatbed.

“We are more than happy now to consider a run length of one copy. One major new customer requires prototype copies of its entire catalogue before the final full run is produced. To print these press-proofs digitally and then bind them with DigiBook 200 is so easy and simple, and the customer is extremely impressed with the presentation,” said Riley.

Twenty10 Digital has six staff and a turnover in excess of £500,000. It produces digital and wide-format print including booklets, banners, posters and business cards for design agencies and a range other customers including Suzuki and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
