The group has confirmed that it is in discussions with works council and trade union representatives over plans to rationalise and, in a number of cases, shut down several "uneconomic" plants in Europe.
This includes operations in France, Germany, Sweden, Spain and Italy.
According to press reports and local speculation, two corrugated packaging mills at Nelson in Lancashire and Chelmsford in Essex have been earmarked for closure, with over 200 jobs at risk.
Amicus GPMS national officer Steve Sibbald confirmed that the union had embarked on 90-day consultation talks with the management to discuss the future for the two plants.
However, a spokesman for Smurfit Kappa said that there would be no official comment while negotiations continued.
