Sappi to up woodfree prices

Sappi plans to increase prices for its woodfree coated sheets and reels by between 5% and 7% and other manufacturers may follow suit.

Although the increase is needed, buyers were concerned that it could be too soon. The South African fine paper producer intends to raise prices in September due to price increases in raw materials, energy and logistics.

The firm also increased coated woodfree prices in sheets and reels in Europe by 7% in April (PrintWeek, 11 March).

Another mechanical coated manufacturer is considering an increase of between 7% to 8% in the autumn.

"We are in great need of this while today's price level is not enough," said a source.

A magazine paper buyer said he appreciated that everyone was fairly desperate for an increase and thought others could follow.

"At some stage, price rises have to be successful. They (Sappi) have picked the right time in that September is a busy time of the year," he said.

"I think it's a gamble on the market tightening as much as it would hope by September.

"From a publisher's perspective we are only just starting to see an improvement. There's still overcapacity in the market and I think it's just a bit too soon."
