Figures from the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) showed paper and board output was 0.5% higher in the fourth quarter at 21.6m tonnes. Total output for the year reached 87.8m tonnes, down 2.6% on the previous year.
CEPI statistics manager Eric Kilby said that the year-on-year fall in production was less than other world regions and that overall levels remained high with 2001 exceeding 1998 levels by more than 5m tonnes.
Production levels are consistent with last months preliminary CEPI results (PrintWeek, 1 March).
