Nick Hand has been back on the road on his ‘printing bike’, with appearances at a number of festivals.

Hand famously pedalled from Bristol to Gutenberg’s birthplace in Mainz, Germany in 2014, and subsequently rode from Lands’ End to John O’Groats on a Great Britain tour in 2017.

A recent project involved printing a map of Bristol’s oldest trees for the city’s Festival of Nature.

“I printed the map letterpress on a proofing press in two colours and then I hand set some lead type and printed the reverse of the card at the event in Broadmead, Bristol for a project called Overstory,” he explained.

Around 150 of the A5-format maps have been produced using Hand’s trusty Adana 8x5 press.

Hand said the Adana and his specially-adapted bike to carry it were getting “plenty of use”.

“I’m printing at the Interesting Conference in London on Saturday and then at the Heritage Open Day in Midsomer Norton next week.”

Hand will also be in Plymouth next month at the three-day Print in Action festival which features a number of printmakers and studios.
