Polestar focus of further speculation over bidders

Speculation over an imminent sale of Polestar heightened this week, after mergers and acquisitions infosource Mergermarkets said the group was in advanced takeover talks.

Quebecor World, RR Donnelley and St Ives were again mooted as potential purchasers, together with a new name the North American print and publishing group Transcontinental.

A price tag "in excess of $1bn ", or 563m, was suggested. Any deal to buy all or part of Polestar would be extremely complicated, not least because of its labyrinthine finances and the burden of its 129m FRS17 pension deficit.

"It's interesting to think about the form of the sale will it be a share sale or an asset sale? They have two huge sets of liabilities: the pension liability and the loan notes," a City source noted.
