PETF puts print up for a part in skills network

The print industry has moved a step closer to becoming part of a Sector Skills Council (SSC) and will present its case early next year.

The Print Education and Training Forum (PETF) has teamed up with the Proskills training and recruitment group in its bid to join an SSC, a government scheme to boost skills and recruitment.

Now it will make its business case to the Sector Skills Development Agency before a final decision is made. If successful it would be one of 25 SSCs by the middle of next year, with access to around 4m of public funding.

"We now have made real progress," said PETF interim chief executive Richard Bloxam. "The Proskills group is made up of the process and manufacturing industry with print having a very strong presence. It will be a powerful player."

Proskills is currently in the process of seeking non-executive directors for the main management board and a chief executive in January 2005. Candidates for that role will be expected to be operating at senior levels within their sector and have an active interest in training and development.

Non-executive directors will be expected to commit voluntarily up to 12 days a year including four board meetings and associated consultations with industry groups.
