Pepper Communications has enjoyed a significant increase in uptime since it installed a new Baumann PSW3 pile turner.

The PSW3 was supplied by Friedheim International in January and replaced an ageing device at Plymouth-based Pepper that was incurring high repair costs.

The new arrival complemented a significant £1.6m kit upgrade in August last year, the centrepiece of which was a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106 with coater.

Production manager Jake Whitford said: “Since installing the new Baumann machine, uptime has increased and pallets are turned far quicker. It also complements our most recent press investment.

“We have a robust sales strategy to increase our sales 10% each year, and our new Baumann pile turner allows us to work more efficiently with maximum uptime.

“Pepper is always looking to make that marginal gain and drive efficiency and I am sure that the Baumann will not be our last investment with Friedheim.”

The Baumann BSW3 is a B1 machine with a maximum sheet format of 1.3x1.85m, as well as a top pile height of 2m. The device also boasts a loading capacity of 2m.

In late 2018, Pepper installed an array of solar PV panels onto the roof of its 3,500sqm premises to reduce its carbon footprint and save on energy costs.

The company’s kit portfolio also includes a Heidelberg Cylinder and two Xerox Versant 3100 digital presses. It employs 41 full-time staff and circa 20 casual workers across its main Plymouth production facility, as well as satellite offices in London and Bristol, on £6.5m turnover.
