Q Although we are a completely digital business, we do have a big soft spot for print and good typography in particular (and it's not just me because I used to edit PrintWeek!). This place is covered in posters and nice examples of type. Also our chief executive is the granddaughter of a Chicago printer and has always been very fond of Beatrice Warde's ‘Printing Office' paean to print. Do you know where we could get hold of a nicely printed copy? We could print it off the internet, but while desktop printing has come along way, it wouldn't be quite the same.
Lauretta Roberts, WGSN, London
A How delightful to hear from you Ms Roberts, and what an excellent request. You're quite right, this sort of thing requires ‘proper' printing. A poster of Beatrice Warde's words used to be on sale in the US, but seems to be unavailable nowadays.
I felt extremely hopeful when I saw on the Piccolo Press's website that they have a lovely version of her ‘Pause stranger, you stand in a Composing Room'. But not the particular paean you require.
Having contacted the company, Tim Honnor tells me that they definitely intend to produce some - I'm sure you're not the only PrintWeek reader who'd be interested in a copy.
Poor old Piccolo is currently in the midst of a clean-up operation as the severe weather has resulted in some flooding in their workshop. But if you can wait for a few weeks, some suitably beautiful letterpress printing should be well underway. Contact: Piccolo Press www.piccolopress.co.uk 01667 454508.
I must also thank Paul Foster for suggesting that Agfa Monotype may still have some copies knocking around somewhere. I haven't been able to speak to anyone there yet, but will chase up this lead too. It is very much appreciated.
And what better opportunity to repeat Warde's timeless words:
Printing Office
This is a Printing Office.
Crossroads of civilization.
Refuge of all the arts against the ravages of time.
Armoury of fearless truth against whispering rumour.
Incessant trumpet of trade.
From this place words may fly abroad, not to perish on waves of sound, not to vary by the writer's hand but fixed in time, having been verified by proof.
Friend, you stand on sacred ground.
This is a Printing Office.
