Overmatter: Super Drupa, beams are gonna blind me

So. Eurovision is over for another year, but the catchy pop vibe of Sweden’s winning entry is still resonating around the office at PrintWeek Towers. Even the predictably unsuccessful GB entry from Electro Velvet has proved to be a lasting earworm.

With euro-pop at the front of mind, and Drupa 2016 now a mere year away, thoughts have naturally turned to the all-important topic of the Drupa song. More worryingly (for some at least) will there even be one this time around?

We turned to Drupa song aficionado and keeper of the ‘Cult of Drupa Songs’ Facebook page, Mark Stephenson, for an answer. “Someone said that it was definitely going to happen, then next I heard it was undecided. Now I’m less than 50% positive. The corners of my mouth are going down,” says a worried Stephenson.

If no song is forthcoming at the traditional year-out-from-the-show point, ie now, then perhaps a reboot of a past classic is in order? Stephenson suggests the first song from 1986. Altogether now: “Drupa, Drupa, in-ter-na-tional printing and paper fair…” (repeat to fade).

We might be able to ‘touch the future’ at Drupa next year, but will we be forced to listen to the past?
