Litho and digital label printer NSD has invested in a new Edale FL3 press, arriving on Friday (3 March).

The 430mm web, eight-colour press will be configured to NSD’s requirements, with turnbar rail system, rail-mounted cold foil, and lamination module.

The press will likewise have Edale’s autonomous EZ Reg camera register system, two die-cutters, and waste matrix stripper, alongside UV LED curing, crossover module for two- or three-ply labels, and screen unit.

Chris Hogarth, managing director of NSD, said that the firm had known it wanted to buy from Edale even before it was sure it wanted a new press.

He said: “In early 2020, we had discussions with Edale about a new press. Ultimately, we decided to invest in more specialised finishing equipment; however, we had productive discussions with Edale and very successful trials.

“In 2022, we decided it was time to reopen our flexo investment programme, and we had an  easy choice in the end. Edale was very focused on giving us what we needed, and the fact that they are in the UK was also a consideration.

“The machines are well-engineered, proven workhorses, and we ‘did a deal’ in a matter of days, all over a few online meetings.”

The new FL3 now sits alongside the firm’s Digicon digital label press at its Edinburgh site, where it employs 45.

Edale’s business development manager Louise Bailey said: “NSD are a fantastic company with a great heritage and are highly regarded specialists in the label sector. We are very proud that they have chosen us to support their future growth.

“When we met Chris, he explained that they are a ‘flexo and digital business’ and were keen to discuss what the FL3 flexographic label press could offer and how it could compliment their core offering to their growing customer base.”

Hogarth added that the new press would help NSD take on more clients in the UK and abroad: “We needed a combination of technology and cost, and we believe, pound for pound, that the Edale FL3 flexographic label press is the best value machine on the market.

“It's all about growth, and NSD is growing, so we needed to create flexible capacity to keep on the growth curve.”

NSD was founded in 1858 as The Simpson Label Company, making it one of the oldest established printing companies in the UK.
