NI launches prove strength of UK magazine market

News International is to jump aboard the consumer magazine bandwagon with plans to cash in on a booming weeklies sector that has grown by 14m sales in the last year.

NI declined to comment on the plans to launch three weekly women's titles and a men's magazine, reported by MediaGuardian.

News of the launches came as James Siever, secretary general of the European Rotogravure Association, told the BPIF's Print Congress  that the UK's magazine market was Europe's most dynamic.

He said that Prinovis' decision to invest in its 115m Liverpool plant was based on growth in the UK's magazine arena.

"[Prinovis managing director] Stephan Krauss has set a growth target of 2.5% to 3% per year. Germany's market is very flat, so the only way to achieve that growth was in the UK," he said.

Prinovis' Liverpool plant will print supplements for NI, but it is not clear where the four new titles will be printed. Both Polestar and Prinovis declined to comment.
