Manchester Printers increases turnover with online store

Manchester Printers has increased its annual turnover to 1.2m in 2011/2012 from 940,000 in 2010/2011, following the launch of its online store.

The six employee company paid £6,000 for the system, which was developed by Manchester-based web designer LV Media. Managing director Gavin Page said it was responsible for at least 15% of the total increase in turnover.

Manchester Printers offers printed promotional material such as business cards, banners and flyers and its website now receives 70 to 100 hits everyday. Page said 70% of those result in sales.

He added that it has brought in customers that would not previously have heard of the company. "We normally do a lot of B2B work but the website’s attracting more of the general public," he said.

In the past year, Manchester Printers has worked on a variety of jobs, from long print runs for the NHS to short runs for a local vicar.

"Last year we wouldn’t have thought of doing those kinds of small jobs but now we can. It pays to have an efficient system that gets things done quickly," said Page.

"If the jobs needs any extra attention, we charge more. But, if they’re quick, we can do them very cheaply."

He added that the company would not abandon its face-to-face service, though. "Customers asking for higher value quotes normally want to call and speak to an expert in person. Some people need that confidence so we don’t want to lose that."
