MAN reveals it fought off bid to break it up

MAN chief executive Rudolf Rupprecht revealed in the Financial Times on Monday (26 July) that the firm, which includes press manufacturer MAN Roland, fought off a hostile bid to split the group up last year.

Rupprecht told the FT that Heinrich Weiss, head of engineering group SMS (in which German engineering giant MAN owned a 51% stake), planned to spin off the truck division to Volkswagen.

His bid failed when MAN's biggest shareholder insurer Allianz, insisted the bid needed the support of MAN management.

Rupprecht also said that the firm would resist attempts to break the group up.
