Johnston Mailing upgrades Canon firepower

Johnston Mailing has ordered three Canon imagePress machines in a £200,000 deal to help meet heavy demands for direct mail and edge it into new markets.

Two of the machines, mono imagePress 1135Ps, replaced older imagePress 1135s, and run at 135ppm. The third printer, a colour imagePress C800, will replace a Konica Minolta 7000. The devices are due to be delivered in July.

The company also runs an Océ 100ppm machine and a Konica Minolta 8000.

“We are one of Scotland's largest mailing houses, sometimes running 500,000 mailings a day. The new purchases represent a natural progression and have a good lifespan," said finance director Lindsay Johnston.

The family business has 22 staff and a turnover of £2.4m but brother and managing director Scott Johnston said the new purchase could add 35% to turnover in 12 to 18 months.

He said: “We have been with Canon for several years and the older 1135s have been absolutely bulletproof. It made sense to upgrade.

“We recently won a couple of new contracts with travel businesses and can use the equipment to do a wider variety of work such as full-colour personalised booklets.”

"We can now diversify into new formats such as six-page A5 landscape or six-page A4, while the booklet-making capability enables us to execute innovative personalised direct marketing concepts, such as completely tailored cruise itinerary booklets for high-end travel clients," he added.
