Insight in £250,000 kit investment

Insight Print Media hopes to break the £1m-turnover mark after expanding into new premises, buying two new machines and setting its sights on a third piece of kit.

The business in Bedminster, Bristol, has bought a new Zünd G3 L2500 digital cutting table and wide-format Roland Soljet Pro 4 XR-640 printer and is about to invest in a large flatbed digital printer at its new premises.

The two machines went into the new base a month ago and Insight is set to decide on a Mimaki JFX 200-2513 or a Roland LEJ 640FT flatbed within three weeks. Total investment will be £250,000.

Together the new kit will enable the business to offer a complete design, development and production service using in-house equipment.

The full-service agency offers advice, design, mock-ups and production and branding material using screen, litho and digital print technologies.

After sharing a building and a Zünd G3 with another company for six years, Insight Print Media decided to purchase its own cutting table to accompany its move to a larger premises.

Co-director Tom Simpson said: “We were sharing premises with another print company and using their kit. We moved a mile and half in early May and this is the first kit we have owned.

“We started in 2010 and were operating in around 93sqm. The new base is 280sqm. We have four staff and £750,000 turnover. Within 12 to 15 months we expect it to be £1m to £1.2m.”

Insight Print Media was also looking to recruit three more staff, one with creative and design skills, two to work in production, he said.

“We cover four sectors: brands, retail, events and workplaces but want to focus more heavily on the latter two, doing things like wallpaper graphics.

“The Zünd will enable us to tackle development work for brands and agencies so we can design POS and packaging and take them to the markeplace.”

Co-founder and director Kevin Davidson said: “Zünds are at the higher end of cutting/sampling tables, with good reason; they are premium machines that offer quality and precision.”

Since its installation at Insight Print Media the Zünd G3 L2500 has been put to work on graphics for super-sized hoarding structures and 3D parrots with flip-flops for feathers.

Davidson added: “We cut everything on the new Zünd – Re-board, Dibond, box board, acrylic, wood, cardboard – and it's perfect. It gives us the flexibility to cut, rout or crease any material.

The business has also recently developed a range of temporary POS units for blue chip brands manufactured throughout Europe and bespoke acrylic literature dispensers for a local brand.
