The Merlin FG, from Spectra Technology Integration, is a high speed, ink-jet printer suitable for foods including biscuits and chocolates. It can apply smells and flavours as well as colours. Imaging can take place when the food is still warm, delicate, wet, liquid or uncooked.
The four-colour printer can be adapted for monochrome and supports file formats including TIFF, JPEG and EPS.
According to Spectra, ink-jet decoration "avoids waste and lengthy start ups". Pre-stored images, text and graphics can be imaged and repeated or varied depending on the printing surface.
