The industry body claims that the industry is facing the most difficult period in its history and if its members do not recoup costs, customer choice and service is going to be very much reduced.
A BCF spokesman said: In a volatile world economy and with reduced demand from a contracting UK printing industry, ink manufacturers will be forced to pass on increased costs to the printers.
The BCF found that in the past five years the sales of publication and commercial inks have fallen 7%. The Federation said that the industry had a commendable record in that period with ink prices having reduced significantly.
It said that the 350m industry is suffering reduced demand from its UK newspaper advertising, magazine and packaging sectors.
At the same time it is facing increased raw materials and operational costs.
