The Dorchester magazine printer made the move after one of its major customers, Macmillan, transferred the typesetting of its academic Nature journals, spanning 40 publications, to its Indian sister company.
The Ficelle software, installed this month through Turning Point Technologies, is the first major investment for The Friary Press since its MBO in February, although its now looking to install a new MIS and upgrade its Xerox DocuColor 2060 to a 6060.
It has also amalgamated its customer service and pre-press teams to give customers a single point of contact.
Ficelle provides the printer and customer with a job definition format (JDF) that enables each job to be tracked through the pre-press cycle.
