DMGT financial director Peter Williams blamed the fall on an increase in capacity, with other publishers bringing new and upgraded presses on-stream.
"Overall it would be a few million pounds. But thats spread across all Northcliffe plants, so does not mean we will have to lose any shifts or people," said Williams.
But the drop in contract printing has been compensated by the groups 25m annual saving on newsprint, after prices fell by 10% at the start of the year.
Williams said the group was happy with the latest ABC figures, showing increased sales for the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday.
