Instrumental in shaping strategy, culture and commercial success

Denmaur's Doug Jessop sets retirement date

Jessop: active at a high level in the publishing and web offset arena for many years

Denmaur’s Doug Jessop is set to retire this summer after 42 “non-stop” years in the paper industry.

Jessop’s career began in 1983 at Capital Paper International where he set up a division focused on publishers, tour operators and end users.

In 2000 he was introduced to Denmaur owners Mike and Nick Gee by sales director Julian Townsend.

Jessop went on to set up Media Paper Management in St Albans with Denmaur’s backing. The operation went on to become the merchant’s Publication Papers division, including team members at St Albans and Sittingbourne.

Jessop is managing director of the division and a main board director at the group.

Denmaur said he had been instrumental in shaping the group’s strategy, culture and commercial success.

Group managing director Andy Buxton said: “On behalf of the entire Denmaur operation, I extend our heartfelt thanks to Doug for his professionalism, dedication and remarkable service. His impact on the business will be felt long into the future.”

Jessop will retire at the end of July following a handover and transition period.

He told Printweek that he was happy to be leaving on the best of terms, which was important: “I think that part of having a successful career is knowing the right time to go, and this is my time to exit.

“The pivotal moment for me was meeting Mike Gee for the first time. I had a small team of people that were looking for a new home. Mike had only met me the same day and he put an offer forward that was very supportive.

“I’ll always be grateful for that. And more recently Andy has taken over after Nick retired, and I’ve got on famously with Andy. I think Denmaur has been great for me, and I hope I’ve been good for them. It’s been a good marriage.”

Denmaur marketing and sustainability director Danny Doogan commented: “It is a fitting tribute to someone who’s operated a high level in the publishing and web offset arena for many years yet has retained a relatively low profile throughout.

“And that’s not only because he’s been an exceptionally busy individual throughout his working life, but also a very respected family man as well.”

Jessop’s customer relationships and responsibilities will be devolved through the wider team in the Publication Papers division.
