Debenhams cans catalogue

Debenhams is to drop its printed catalogue and move all its mail order shopping to the internet.

The retailer has revealed that the 550,000-run Spring/Summer Debenhams Direct catalogue will be the last of the twice-yearly publications.

A spokeswoman said that the move would allow Debenhams "to concentrate on the web business and to develop online sales via debenhams.com. This is a great growth area and the potential is very strong."

Debenhams, which reported 90% sales growth on its web-based shopping last year, is to continue to market certain lines and products with direct mail and small brochures throughout the year. Subscribers to the catalogue will be informed by letter of the decision.

Press reports suggested that Debenhams Direct staff would be transferred to the web division, but the company refused to confirm that all staff would be retained.

Debenhams has made about 15% of head office staff redundant since its 1.7bn acquisition last year by the Baroness Retail consortium.
