Communisis to take over Nationwide in-house mailing

Communisis has won a major nine-year contract with Nationwide Building Society that includes the company's transactional mailing which is currently produced in-house.

The London-headquartered print manager has already carried out direct mail, regulatory communications and security printing for Nationwide for several years but until now the financial organisation has chosen to carry out its transactional mailing in-house at its site in Swindon.

After an open tender process Communisis has secured a significant nine-year contract with the firm to expand its range of services and carry out all transactional, marketing and regulatory mailings at its facility in Speke, Liverpool. The agreement will also see Communisis take over responsibility for document asset management and document composition.

Communisis chief executive Andy Blundell said that the new contract was part of a review by Nationwide of its full ‘outbound customer communication’ requirements.

He added: "This is a big commitment by them to outsource things which for a long time have been in-house. It isn’t a decision they have taken lightly. Instead of doing it all in disparate places we are bringing it all under one roof."

Blundell said that the significant length of the contract was related to the investment commitment required by Communisis to meet the contract requirements.

"The duration needed to be sufficient to make it work for both parties. A large part of our business is underpinned by long-term contracts and this plays a role in that," he explained. Communisis already has a "significant" team deployed on-site at Swindon and Blundell said that was now set to grow as a result of the contract.

He said that the transactional work would gradually be transferred from Nationwide’s Swindon site to Communisis’ Liverpool facility from the first quarter of 2013, to be produced on its two HP T-400 high-speed ink jet web presses.

"We invested around £10m in this equipment and it is really attracting a lot of interest in the market because we have the ability to produce the best colour in the UK and give totally variable content."

He added: "We are leading the charge in transpromotional work and I think things are really going to start to happen now."
