According to the BPIF, these latest government age discrimination regulations are one of the most important pieces of employment legislation since the 1970s.
The age cap for claiming unfair dismissal has been removed, so those over 65 can now make a claim, whereas before they were prevented from doing so.
"Printers and finishers should think carefully about regulating many of those staff over 65," said Anne Copley, BPIF head of legal. "They can't just turn round and say they don't need them anymore as they're now protected by the law."
The BPIF has urged employers to begin consulting with all employees due for retirement between 1 October and 1 April 2007, to give them notice of the exact date on which they are expected to retire.
"Follow that up on 1 October this year with a letter notifying them of their right to request the employer to reconsider," said Copley. "It is very important you diarise that date and respond immediately when the act comes into force, or you may incur penalties."
